UPDATE: LETTER I SENT TO THE SCHOOL ABOUT THIS:

"Mr. Cruise & Ms Balm, May 3, 2016

This letter is in regard to the incident that occurred at the bus stop last week with Nicholas Sample and another student.

Ms Balm, Nicholas told me that you said you were disappointed in him. Well frankly I Am disappointed in you for making my son feel as if he had done something terribly wrong when he didn’t. Maybe if you knew the details you would not have said that.

What he did was right. He stuck up for Mekhi & Khaniya White who are like family to him. The other student was picking on them. The other student threw a bottle of water in Nicholas’ face, he also punched Nicholas. Nicholas put the other student in a choke hold to restrain him.

Do you know why? I will tell you why. Nicholas does not like to fight. He doesn’t like to hurt others intentionally even if they have hurt him. Ask any of his teachers and they will tell you he is a compassionate kind boy. He restrained the other student to end the fight.

The fight did not “escalate” as you said it could have Mr Cruise because my son did not allow it to escalate. My son was physically capable of hurting the other student but instead he restrained him and told the boy not to mess with him again.

Yes, the incident has passed and it is over and it will be forgotten however what Ms. Balm said to my son and how she made him feel will not be forgotten. It is sad that you would make a child feel this way when they reacted appropriately in a situation. My son did what he was taught by his father and I. He stuck up for others and himself, he defended himself which by Virginia Law he has every right to do, (screw the school rules that he cannot hit back), as opposed to fighting the other student he restrained him as he was taught so that he could end the altercation.

No disrespect you Mr. Cruise but before you call me about my son having an altercation again make sure you have all the details, because several were left out.

Thank you!

Tara Sample"

OUR MISSION STATEMENT :

THE DEFENDERS: Bully Patrol are about trying to encourage kids through positive actions of their peers. We hope to teach our young people to take a stand together against abusive behavior, because there is a lot more kids that want to learn and get along than kids that want to harass/bully others. If we promote this in our elementary schools we can greatly reduce future bullying and harassment. A lot of people have shared their stories with us. Some are very encouraging, some of them will bring you to tears and some of them make you want to punch a wall. We want to give them a voice. Some kids can handle themselves, some need our help. Even though bullies make up only a small percentage of students their effects can be devastating and sometimes deadly. Lets not lose anymore kids.

The Defenders Bully Patrol is a self-financed (me) organization so any donations will help us publish our books. But if you choose not to donate that's cool too. \m/

The Defenders: Bully Patrol book/campaign is geared toward K-5, We hope to encourage kids with stories about real kids taking a stand together against bullying. Empowering our kids is the only way to make positive changes in your school. I truly believe we are on to something that can help all children, even the ones doing the bullying. Great reviews already for The Defenders first book:

It's about time someone tackled this issue from a different angle. Great start to a series that shows lots of promise. My kids and I loved this book and we can't wait to read more stories about the defenders. -Anonymous

This gem should be required reading for K-5. As an Elementary School Physical Education teacher, I’ve seen bullying enough to know that there’s no easy fix to the age-old problem. But I like William Carter’s succinct take on this issue in The Defenders: Bully Patrol. I was wondering where this easy read for elementary school readers was going, and I was thinking halfway through what Carter brought home in his closing sentence, “There is strength in numbers.”

Yes, as the book recommends, first line of defense, find an adult, but if you’ve ever experienced bullying, you know that’s not always possible. Without giving anything away, this educationally entertaining volume gives us another alternative, a logical, but not necessarily obvious alternative. This is the book you make every student in your K-5 read, from your Kindergartners like Matthew to your 5th graders like Tommy. The illustrations are wonderful and diverse. -John Winston http://www.johndarrylwinston.com/

I love the illustrations they brought the story to life by putting a face to the characters. The story was short, but to the point. Bullying is a subject we all have experience or witness, so it’s good to see a book that focuses on this issues. -Renee Shaw

Thank you for the book, Coby loved it and wants to keep reading it. :) -
